Review:My first ever review starts now!! I thought I would chose a movie that got some good reviews and now throw in my bad one. I did not like this film. When it ended, I wasn't quite sure yet that I didn't like this film, but the more I talked about it, the more I realized I was pretty much spewing hate crimes against it.
It wasn't the acting. It was the dialogue. The kids in the film were very well casted and did an awesome job with what they were given. Now when I say what they were given, I am saying that they were given lackluster dialogue that was less interesting than watching the grass grow in the desert. Same with Kyle Chandler. I am a big fan of his, from the show Friday Night Lights (watch it on netflix!!) and was hoping for him to get a bigger part with more dialogue, but he was nowhere to be seen for the majority of the movie.
It wasn't the Alien. It was the Alien. Yeah, that was confusing. So when it comes to JJ Abrams he is one to hold out on what the alien or surprise actually is as long as he possibly can, examples being Cloverfield (A Fan) and Lost (Not A Fan). In Super 8, JJ did a good job at not revealing too much detail about the alien too soon and the script revealed this information about the alien in a very constructive way. But if you want definite answers about this alien don't be surprised when you don't get it. (SPOILER AHEAD) I was just as disappointed when, I did not find out the reason, the alien came to Earth as I was disappointed in the reason the alien left Earth. This entire film and all of JJ Abrams work reminds me of Lacanian theory. He talked about the object of desire. This being the fact that you are always heading towards some object of desire and when you finally get this object of desire you realize that this was not at all what you thought it was going to be. It was the journey itself that is the most interesting and at the end of the journey you will always be let down. This is the best way to describe the film in my opinion.
In conclusion though, this was a period piece with aliens in it. It brought you back to old Spielberg days, and was a beautiful looking film. By no means am I telling you not to go see this movie because it was entertaining. Just don't expect a big ending that will blow your mind because it will only let you down
